Jacob Berend (Jaap) Bakema (Groningen, March 8, 1914 - Rotterdam, February 20, 1981) was a Dutch architect and co-founder of the Van Den Broek and Bakema office, which occupies a special place in Dutch architecture history of the 20th century.

Life course
In 1935, at the secondary technical school in Groningen, Bakema studied engineering and road and water engineering. He worked for Groninger architect Willem Reitsema for some time. Between 1937 and 1941 he studied in Amsterdam, Hooger Bouwkundig Onderricht, the architectural education which later became the Academy of Architectural Arts. He completed this program under his mentor Mart Stam cum laude. During this period he also worked with Cornelis van Eesteren in Amsterdam and at Van Tijen and Maaskant in Rotterdam.
In 1942, he attempted to reach England from the occupied Netherlands. He was detained in the Pyrenees and detained in France. In the fall of 1944 he managed to reach Groningen again. He joined his colleague architect Evert van Linge.

Rotterdam, Central Library
Between 1945 and 1948, Bakema worked at the Housing Agency in Rotterdam. In 1948 he joined Johannes Brinkman and Jo van den Broek of the architectural firm Brinkman and Van den Broek. Brinkman was then very ill and Van den Broek had just been appointed professor at Delft University of Technology. After the death of Brinkman in 1949, the office continued under the name Van den Broek and Bakema in 1950. From 1959 to 1964 Bakema was in the editorial board of the magazine Forum, together with Aldo van Eyck and Herman Hertzberger.
With the Van den Broek bureau and Bakema, Jaap Bakema has pressed a heavy stamp on reconstruction in Rotterdam. The last building he was involved with is the Central Library (1977-1983) in Rotterdam. In 1981, Jaap Bakema died.

Trivia
In 2006, the Bakema Foundation was founded. She annually allocates a research grant of 10,000 euros for research at the cutting edge of architecture, society and technology.
The characteristic cottages on the parks of Sporthuis Centrum, the later Center Parcs, were designed by Jaap Bakema.
